THE VARIOUS TYPES OF LIGHTNING

People often think of lightning as two (or at most three) different types: fork lightning, sheet lightning and ‘heat’ lightning. But these divisions are not actually based in reality. Fork lightning is merely lightning where one can see the actual lightning channel. Sheet lightning, by contrast, is where the lightning stroke itself is hidden (usually by cloud) and only a flash is seen. The term ‘heat lightning’ is sometimes used when no thunder is heard.

Meteorologists do recognise three forms of lightning, but these are based on completely different features. These three are: cloud-to-cloud (CC) lightning, sometimes called ‘intercloud lightning’; cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning; and lightning between different parts of the same cloud (IC lightning), sometimes known as ‘intra-cloud lightning’. These terms really speak for themselves. With the intra-cloud lightning the path of the stroke is usually hidden well within the cloud, so this tends to be the form that is given the popular term ‘sheet lightning’.
